I had a really disgusting beef fajita wrap for lunch. I have a feeling it's going to make a reappearance fairly soon. I figure why not enjoy this monster rebirth with a little Masters of Horror.

Today, several new shorts from the Masters of Horror series were released on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Why do I seem to always talk about the horror stuff? BECAUSE I LIKE IT! YOU GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? I'm sure my fajitas would like to greet your face in some way.

Ahem... excuse me. You could always go play Galaga Legions if you don't like this stuff.

Here are the shorts up for grabs today - They are all available in SD for 240 MS Points:

  • We All Scream for Ice Cream
  • Right to Die
  • The Black Cat
  • Incident On and Off A Mountain Road
  • Homecoming
  • Fair Haired Child
  • Pick Me Up
  • Haeckel's Tale
  • The Damned Thing
  • The Screwfly Solution
  • Valerie on the Stairs
  • The V Word
  • Sounds Like

I was forwarded a link to an article on the Playstation Blog this morning that stated Sony has announced that all of the instruments in three upcoming music games (Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution) will be compatible with each other.

At the bottom a Gamasutra article about the blog post it stated:

Similar music game peripheral enforcement has yet to be enacted (or at least officially announced) on the Xbox 360 platform.

For the record, we also do that, so consider this an official announcement.

All the instruments from Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution will be cross-compatible.

In other words, welcome to the party.  ;)

Image:Too Human.jpgAs many of you may be aware, Too Human comes out this week.  I had the chance to play it this past weekend, and spent about 50 hours on the game.  I'm addicted.  I have beaten Too Human three times with two different classes.

As a fan of MMOs, and games like Diablo II (which is my all-time favorite game), Too Human scratches the compulsive itch that I have to collect loot, and tweak out my skill trees.

The game has a demo on XBLM which I encourage you to check out to see if you like the style and concept game.  Assuming you are into the style of gameplay, there are some concepts, tips, and tricks that may enhance your gameplay.

  • Dying all the time?  Try a Commando class.  Go the Cybernetic alignment, pour your skill points into increasing slug rate of fire, and cannon range.
  • Can't see in combat?  Use the ISO camera view (down on the d-pad a few times)
  • Get hit when jumping?  Use the "B" button - it's a dodge, not just a roll.  Keep sliding from enemy to enemy to avoid getting surrounded
  • Low on health?  Bio-engineers can regenerate, everyone else should find a glowing crystals (barrels) which give you a health boost when smashed with melee
  • How to deal with polarity enemies?  If an enemy is fire, poison or ice you can keep your distance - but still attack in melee with a fierce attack (push LS and RS at the enemy simultaneously)
  • Lost?  Look for clues in the environment, lights will pulsate in the direction you are supposed to head, doors will have animated lights around the frame of where you should go.
  • Salvage system confusing?  At it's simplest, look at the damage (for weapons), or armor (for gear) and use the one with the best number.  Salvage everything else for money to to purchase new gear, or craft items
  • Charm system confusing?  Equip the charm, then "complete" it by inserting the proper runes into it after you have accomplished the specific objective for that charm.  Rare charms need common charms inserted into them rather than runes.

I hope these tips help you get the most out of your looting and killing in the world of Too Human!

Today, we announced the beginning of pre-orders for Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Stick your chicken (sorry, "breegull" for the nerds :-D) in your backpack and ready up for some machine building mania coming to North America on November 14.

For those interested in the original Banjo Kazooie that has been announced for Xbox LIVE Arcade, we have some news for you, too. If you pre-order BK: Nuts & Bolts, you will receive a code to download the original for free! By completing certain challenges, you will be able to unlock extra content in the Arcade version. So, you can get a head start on this as the Arcade version launches a couple of weeks after the retail game ships.

Lastly, if you're a fan of the Olympics, you will probably like the newly revealed Jiggoseum where you compete in sports events using the contraptions you create.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts can be yours for $39.99

After doing some hunting, I got word that some of the participating retailers will be GameStop, Amazon, Game Crazy and Best Buy. These are NOT the only ones participating but give you a good idea as to the the types of stores you will be able to find the deal.

I'm sure many of you have been following the lead up to this new Xbox 360 exclusive and the day has finally come when you could possibly get your hands on the prize. Yes, Too Human shipped today to North American outlets.

Take on the role of  the Cybernetic Norse God Baldur as he battles his way through hordes of mechanical creatures to stop the desctruction of mankind. There are endless combinations of armor and weaponry at your disposal that can be leveled up and improved using found items. The RPG-style character customization available is something new and shiny for you to play with.

It would seem that Chris has taken the time to color his armor and have it match unlike my character who could star in a kindergarten play. That might be a little drastic but you get the idea. I'm too interested in having the biggest, most lethal sword. I did just say that. Shut your mouths.

For more information on Too Human, check out xbox.com

This week, Galaga Legions hits Xbox LIVE Arcade. Brought to you by the same team that delivered Pac Man Championship Edition, this is a souped up version with shiny new graphics and a huge number of enemy waves to shoot through.

Galaga Legions can be yours for 800 MS Points and is rated E for everyone.

For more information, check out Xbox.com

If you're looking for some entertainment this weekend, several new things went up on Xbox Live this past week for you to choose from. Whether you're in the mood for a cute little horror flick, making some loot to use in a future release (HINT HINT) or just want to spruce up your dash, there's something for everyone. These are my picks for tryouts this weekend:

Fable II: Pub Games
Make some gold for use in Fable II when it launches playing these games - Youtube is a wonderful research tool. Wait - what? The trial for the Pub Games is Free and the actual game is 800 MS Points or free if you pre-ordered Fable II (check availibility at your retailer).

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 Demo
Some say it's an easy game. I still happen to like it and somehow missed last year's. I think I left it in NJ. I'll be checking it out for sure. T'is a free trial.

Think Pink Theme
Designed by one of our own GamerchiX (Venus Envy), this offers something other than the usual dark or well endowed female themes.  Yes, it's pink - DON'T JUDGE ME! This theme can be yours for 150 MS Points. (There are other themes available from Disruptive Publishers this week if pink isn't your thing.)

Bionic Commando: Rearmed
I know some of you are still addicted to Geo Wars 2 and Braid, but don't forget about the newest release on XBLA! It costs 800 MS points and is rated M for Mature.

Movie: Asylum (Rated R)
Hot Chicks, the spirits of sadistic doctors and carnage. Fun times!
HD: 360 MS Points
SD: 240 MS Points

Movie: Ghost Ship (Rated R)
A big ship and ghosts. 'nuff said.
SD: 240 MS Points

Movie: The Ruins (Rated R)
Hot people visit ruins in the Mexican Jungle and meet with an interesting gross "thing". You get the gist!
SD: 320 MS Points
HD: 480 MS Points

While she may have worked behind the scenes on Fable II, the work this amazing artist has done back there is now recognized by millions. Meet Jo Chen - the woman behind the Fable II (and the original Fable) hero artwork. I got the chance to ask her a little about life, work and relaxation.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background? Did you study art at school? What is some cool stuff you have worked on outside of Fable.
I was born and grew up in Taiwan; Taipei to be exact.  Both my sister and I attended the Fu Hsin Trade and Arts School and we moved to the U.S. about a year after graduation.  My first jobs in North America were drawing the interiors for Racer X for Wildstorm and Darkminds Macropolis for Dreamwave.  After the Dreamwave experience, I gave up creating interiors and concentrated on covers.  I produced many of the Street Fighter covers for UDON, Robin for D.C., Runaways for Marvel and most recently Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 for Dark Horse.

You were responsible for the box art for both Fable and Fable II. Were you excited to learn that you would get to do the second cover?
Sure.  FABLE was received very well and it led to package work on FABLE: The Lost Chapters and now FABLE II.  Any opportunity to work with great artists and designers and then collect a paycheck for it is always cause for excitement and celebration.
What is involved in the process of designing a cover? Did you have to create multiple designs, have to please 800 people and make tiny revisions like moving a pixel to the left or right?
Yes and Yes.  The capital investment in games is enormous and there is little room for error or dissatisfaction.  I always produce a number of designs based and one is selected.  That piece goes through multiple critiques and revisions before it’s complete.

It can be stressful trying to please so many people. Do you do anything out of the ordinary to relax (such as maybe putting someone’s face on a dartboard?)?
Of course.  To relax, I work on my own characters and stories, read, chat with friends.  Normal stuff.  I do employ the dartboard-face occasionally.  The difficult part is keeping the face recognizable after pinning it up on the dartboard (skin is so elastic after being separated from the skull).

What do you use to create your art? Do you paint on canvas or is it all created on the computer?
I start with a pencil sketch, and then use a combination of Photoshop, Painter and scanned bits of natural media (i.e. watercolor, acrylic, chocolate cake frosting, etc.) to create the entire composition.  Also, I have built quite a few custom brushes in both of the software programs that I use regularly.

Are there any other Xbox games that you’d like to have the chance to do art for?
Recently, I did a nice package piece for the Blue Dragon game but it was dropped at the last minute.  I might like a shot at that again.  Halo is an obvious one.  Maybe one of the Clancy games.

What advice do you give to aspiring artists and designers who are trying to break into the gaming/comic book industries?
Well, gaming and comic book industries are worlds apart in terms of earning potential.  Most artists and writers in comics eke out a living.  One works in comics because of a love for comics and not because there is oodles of dough to be made.  Games have larger budgets and pay better but the work is less steady (at least for me).

To ‘break in’ to these industries an artist has to have the chops; plain and simple.  It’s not enough to just want it or to diddle around with it.  That desire has to translate into commitment and the commitment into skill.  An artist forsakes nearly everything else in life to become excellent.  Once you’ve got the chops through study and endless of hours of practice, then you present yourself by submitting work via publisher submission guidelines, networking and portfolio reviews at cons, website galleries, etc.  That’s how most of us do it. I know this sounds boring like there should be some secret back door into these areas of work but that’s about it.  The quality of your work will speak for itself.  It’s a tried and true path.

I'd like to thank Jo for sharing these insights with us. You can find more about her and see other examples of her amazing work at jo-chen.com. For more information on Fable II, visit Xbox.com.

Bizarre Creations unleashed a new online leaderboard for Geometry Wars 2, today. All of you who have been burning your fingers out to try and be one of the top players can go and weep when you find out that you've barely broken the top 100,000. You can check it out at Bizarre's website, here.

Good Luck!

The Mayhem Tour recently rocked the Seattle area and Chris got to go check out the aural carnage. One of his favorite bands, Five Finger Death Punch was headlining and it just so happened that he bumped into lead singer, Ivan, as he was wandering around the venue.

Check out what Ivan had to say about the games he plays as well as what a Five Finger Death Punch game might look like:

Chris was very honored to have gotten the opportunity to talk to Ivan. I was very honored to be extremely jealous of him being able to go. SO THERE.

Check out the Xbox Summer of Music site for more information on 5FDP and other bands in the series.

In the style of other sports greats before him, Brett Favre decided he hadn't had enough time on the field or... um... maybe his... errr... nice earnings so he returned to the girdiron to give fans a little more.

But oh noes! He now has a new home. Where does that leave you with that shiny new copy of Madden NFL 09? Never fear! EA has stepped up quickly offering you a download from their site that allows you to print out a cover featuring Favre in his  "New York" Jets uniform.

Madden NFL 09 is in stores now and has an msrp of $59.99 (In fast talker voice: Wherever available and if all copies are not sold out. Don't blame us if they are, it's not our fault. I will go sit in a corner rocking back and forth if you blame us.)

Alison Carroll, a 23 year old gymnast from Croydon, England has been named as the latest in the line of hotties to portray Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series. Why did I decide to make note of this? Well, because it touches a part of my background. No, it doesn't *touch* me that way... UGH.

The fact of the matter is, Alison is from Croydon - a once thriving town in Surrey, England. (It's gotten a pretty bad rep as of late) - A town I happened to call home for 10 years when I was growing up. Also, Peter Mayhew's parents lived on my street when I was 7. They were very nice. Please don't make me explain that Peter Mayhew played Chewbacca. K? Thanks.

I also wanted to post this so I could give you a photo to drool over if it floats your boat!

Check out the Croydon Guardian for more details!

Eidos' Tomb Raider: Underworld is due out later this year. We will bring details as they come in!

This week, there are two things for you to look forward to on Wednesday! Firstly, the Summer of Arcade continues with Bionic Commando.

With updated graphics, new weapons, online leaderboards and 4-player multiplayer, this version will bring back memories as you swing through the 50 challenging levels.

And remember, when you get stuck behing that obstacle in the beginning but you can't make the dude jump over it - try swinging. It will save your controller from being smashed against a wall (this comes to you from Chris who has experience in this, apparently.)

Bionic Commando: Rearmed can be yours for 800 MS Points and is rated M for Mature by ESRB.

And don't forget, the Fable II pub games will be available to you on Wednesday, too.

For those who have pre-ordered Fable II to get the Pub Games, the date they become available has been announced. You will be able to start earning your cash on August 13. If you haven't pre-ordered but want to start hoarding cash, you can get the games for 800MS points.

I got to check out the three games, “Fortune’s Tower,” “Keystone” and “Spinnerbox” at E3 a couple of weeks ago and had a lot of fun with them. It's obvious that each one is based on a familiar casino game but incorporate their own unique twists.

I spent most of my time (and lost all of my cash about 10 times) on Fortune's Tower. You bet against your own greed as you are dealt cards hoping to make the most cash possible from the sum of the cards in the current row. Makes complete sense, right? Let me stick a screenshot in to try and convey what the hell I'm talking about.

Your struggle with greed comes into play when you decide whether or not to keep dealing rows. If you're not careful, you may be dealt a card with the same face value as a card above it (that touches it). If that happens? Say, "Cheerio" to your cash. You can get lucky in this situation, however, if you are dealt a knight in that same row. He will come alive and magically restore a burned card.

Once, you play, you will see that my long-winded explanation actually makes sense and how easy the game really is to grasp.

Again, you can try your hand at this and the other two pub games on August 13.

This is what stupid looks like:

Not just because of that ridiculous lamp, and not because he is using a Mac.  The man you see in this photo - also known as me - was told that Geometry Wars was a great game.  Yet, at the time, over a year after the release of the game, he refused to believe it.  Now that this man produces a weekly show about games that are addictive and easy to learn, he has forced himself to play pretty much every single arcade game that ever comes out.  Last week, that game was Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2.

This is what heaven looks like:

GWRE2_screen_1

It may not look like it at first glance, but when you jump into the game, GeoWars2 unfolds and becomes much more than a mess of color and twitch action and almost approaches a zen state.  With multiple modes that remind one of classic arcade games - like King, where you zip from safe zone to safe zone, or Pacifism, where you can't use any weapons and just dodge enemies a la Pac-Man - you can choose to play it sweaty and nervous, or in a trancelike state, finding the groove.

The facts are these:  the guy in the photo is less stupid now (though miles away from where he needs to be), and GeoWars2 is a gem, easy to play, familiar in style, but new in its execution.

Sometimes we play games that we enjoy, but that we can't recommend.  GeoWars2 is not one of those.  GeoWars2 is magic.
